Incense is the only top note in Assaf Frankel Battle, so the opening is dry, smoky and resinous from the first moment. Jasmine and rose arrive in the heart. Jasmine is white, heady and a little animalic, while rose is fuller and more classic, and together they form a dense floral bouquet sitting underneath the incense smoke.
Only two notes make up the base, amber and patchouli, and both have weight. Amber is warm, sweet and resinous, and patchouli is dark, earthy and slightly damp. With so few base notes, the finish is simple and rich rather than intricate. The overall style is smoky, floral and warm, with incense and amber sharing the resinous weight and the flowers providing the contrast.
Battle is listed as unisex. A pyramid built on incense, rose and patchouli suggests a darker, more serious style than a fruity or citrus scent would, with jasmine adding some softness. Shop tags place it under autumn and winter, and under evening and special occasions.
